I decided to wait a few days to update on Johnathan's lung function test as I was a bit peeved last week right after. First, I had him up at 4:30 to get there and have the nurse say that she detected slight wheezing in his upper respiratory (which had me confused because there hasn't been any coughing or runny noses at all) and didn't know if they'd be able to do the test that day, thankfully they decided it was ok to proceed since it was in the upper. Second, she was giving him the sleepy meds and Johnathan wanted nothing to do with it, kept gagging and spitting it back out. At one point she said she didn't think we'd able to do the test that he hadn't absorbed enough meds. Thankfully it was during his normal nap time and he was whooped so whatever he did take in he eventually fell asleep to and they were able to complete almost all of the testing.
During the test his results were looking like he had improved quite a bit from the test 6 months ago, however, the doctors conclusions were that he hadn't hardly changed and she is chalking it up to him not growing much therefore his lungs haven't grown and his capacity hasn't increased. It makes sense but how I was spoken to made me feel like they thought we weren't doing a good job with him regarding eating. What do they want us to do, force feed him? Yeah right! The frustrating part is that they say kids his age will only gain about 5 lbs in a year and so far he's been on track to that. Plus, I was a small child and B.J. had issues with gagging/spitting up if he was presented with foods he didn't like so at what point is it chalked up to hereditary? I will admit that Johnathan does still have some chewing issues that we need to work on and will hopefully get squared away with Early On OT starting for the new year school year but that is not all of it.
So, long story short Johnathan will now be on kids boost which is 50 cal per oz vs. the 30 cal he's currently on. I just pray that a) it doesn't fill him up so that's all he wants because I'd hate to lose the solids eating that he is doing and b) that he's able to process it because it's textured like pediasure and he had a harder time with that, spitting up quite a bit, the carnation and whole milk mixture has been better. The other thing we may need to look into is if the zantac isn't enough for his reflux, maybe he needs a different med?
This weekend has been really busy with the fair Friday night (will post pics, the kids had a great time!), baby shower yesterday and b-day party today. This week we have LESA speech tomorrow for Johnathan and aqua for Annabel, Tuesday is Early On PT for all three and hippo for Annabel, Wednesday is speech for Annabel, Thursday is opthamology for all three in the a.m./therapies at DMC in the p.m., and Friday is Early On speech and maybe OT, and Saturday is hippo for Annabel. Yikes! After this week Tuesday night will be a break at least!
